Post - Summer Hair Fixes

By the time a long, fun summer comes to an end your hair is thrashed.

Sun, surf, and chlorine all do their damage to your hair. Perspiration through your scalp, dry shampoos and all the products you use in your hair can gunk up your scalp. The combination of these things can leave you with dull, damaged, color challenged hair, so in order for your hair to look luscious for fall it's time to the following four steps:

1 Microderm Your Scalp

My hair dresser turned me onto this and it is one of the best hair tricks I have ever learned. Just as the skin on your body and on your face need exfoliating, so does your scalp. When your scalp gets a build up of products and dead skin and sebum it can start closing over the follicle, and hair gets thinner and loses its luster.

Using a microdermabrasion treatment at the end of summer clears your scalp and makes way for your hair to grow thick and shiny.
It's a great thing to do pre having your hair colored, and my hairdresser has me do it at the end of each season. You won't believe the difference in your hair and how bouncy it gets after one of these treatments!

I use Nioxin Scalp Renew Dermabrasion Treatment. I order it on Amazon.

2. Get Cut.

When summer is over it's time to get a really good cut.
Refresh your shape, get rid of damaged, split ends and get some new movement in your hair for a fabulous fall look.

3. Masque It.

Summer dehydrates your hair. It losses its luster, gets lank and dull and gets dry dry dry. Show your locks the love by using deep conditioning treatments and masks. My hairdresser makes me use a heavy duty conditioning treatment every time I shampoo, but you may want to do it every couple of weeks or so.
Masque for Beautiful Color 6fl.oz, , large

When I want to spoil myself I use Oribe's incredible Masque For Beautiful Hair available at Space NK

I use lots of Bumble and Bumble products, including their Mending Mask.

I also love Moroccan Oil Intense Hydration Mask. Not only does it make your hair feel beautiful, it smells divine too!

4. Color It.

As fall approaches it's time to change up your color. Ashy, white and platinum blondes need to soften down to soft beige blondes, brunettes can add in a little warmth. Maybe you want some balayage, maybe you want a major change, or maybe just a little toning. Regardless, it's time to work your color!

Summer Beauty Essentials - 8 Must Have Hair Products

Summer-Hair

If someone gave you a truly fantastic trip out of the blue, for say, next week, would you be ready to jump on a plane and go?
I have spent my entire adult life ready to take that flight.

And funnily enough when you are ready to board a flight at a moment's notice all kinds of fantastic opportunities find their way to you.
Whether it's flying to the Caribbean to shoot workout videos, meeting a family member in Europe, accompanying a client to Cabo or Turks and Caicos or just heading out on vacation somewhere fabulous, I am convinced trips come my way because I am always ready to go.

Part of always being ready to go is having all my travel beauty essentials packed and waiting for that next trip. Thanks to the security folks at London's Heathrow airport confiscating the bulk of my travel beauty products, the same products packed in the same clear plastic travel bags that have made their way round and round the world more times than I care to count, I now have to make a list and re-buy it all.

Luckily most of my hair products were packed in my suitcase.

My list of travel beauty essentials doubles up as a list of summer beauty essentials, today we are looking at summer travel hair care:

Summer Beauty Essentials ~ 8 Must Have Hair Products

Travel-Hair-Products

Rahua Voluminous Shampoo and Rahua Voluminous Conditioner
I love these two because they are 100% organic, make your hair bouncy and shiny, and lets face it who doesn't want added volume??

The Ouidid Curl Essentials Trial Set $36 Embrace your curls! This is the greatest thing ever for bringing out the best in your curly or wavy hair. This was my first trip letting my hair go curly, and I had been obsessively obsessing over these products, right up until they got confiscated. I tried t pick up another set at Naimies in L.A. on my way home, but they were out of stock, so I am re-ordering them online this week.

Oribe Travel Sized Gold Lust Oil $37
This lightweight yet luxurious hair oil smoothes, adds glorious shine and is the perfect antidote to a day at the beach. It has a gold fleck in it that keeps your hair looking luscious. I've traveled with it for years - partly because it is super concentrated and lasts for a really long time! You absolutely cannot beat the smell of Oribe products either.

Bumble And Bumble Thickening Spray
My hairdresser just turned me on to this one a few months ago. Even though I have more hair than the next three people all put together, I use this to create volume at the root when I'm blow-drying my hair smooth. It also helps you to get more mileage out of your blowout.

Oribe Travel Sized Style Cream
For luxuriously smooth hair that bounces when you walk and smells like heaven.

Oribe Cote d'Azur Hair Refresher
Spritz a little of this magic spray through your mane any time you want your hair to be refreshed and smell like heaven. This one is a must after a long flight, when everyone's hair smells gross!

Bumble and Bumble Surf Infusion
If you are going for beachy waves and don't have to fight curly, frizzy hair, channel your inner Aniston with Bumble's Surf Infusion.

8 Travel Beauty Essentials

Summertime is all about heading out on vacation.
I'm packing at the moment for a month in Italy leading two Glam Italia Tours (make sure you follow us on Instagram!) so it seemed like a really good time to talk about Travel beauty Essentials.

travel-beauty-products

Travel is tough on your skin.
Air travel is tough on your skin.
Just being in a different climate or in a place with different water can be really tough on your skin.
No one wants to deal with crazy breakouts (hello humidity!) or look dried out like the crypt keeper while they are on vacation. Especially me! So I have 8 beauty essentials that travel with me everywhere I go in the world as well as here in America, to make sure my skin looks great, which in turn makes me feel great!

Allianz Global Assistance Travel Insurance. Get a free quote.

Remember too that especially for summer travel you really don't want to be cavorting around with a full face of makeup on, trying to cover up breakouts.

1. Tatcha Luminous Dewy Skin Mist

Tatcha-Skin-Mist

This is one of my all time favorite skin care products and is just the absolute greatest thing to have with you when you are flying, especially on long haul/international flights. In fact it is the holy grail of travel skin care products!
I don't wear makeup when I fly (just brows and a bold lip) because quite apart from the fact that makeup looks hellacious when you land, your skin is fighting enough battles at 38,000 feet in hours of regurgitated air - it doesn't need to battle foundation as well.
When you have bare skin, even if that means cleansing your face after takeoff, you can pamper, or at least hydrate your skin by spritzing this gorgeous mist during the flight.I swear you can feel your skin relax every time you do!
The full size bottle is allowable in your cabin baggage, but many of the Tatcha products including the Dewy Skin Mist also come in travel size.

2. Tatcha Indigo Soothing Silk Hand Cream

Tatcha-Hand-cream

I got my hands on the Indigo collection from Tatcha a few years ago when winter weather was tearing up my skin. The Indigo collection are healing products, and to this day I still travel with a travel sized tube of Tatcha's Indigo Soothing Silk Hand Cream. In flight it keeps my hands and cuticles from getting dried out and nasty, and the tube is small enough to keep in my handbag while I'm out and about.

Nuxe Reve de Miel Nourishing Lip Balm.

Reve-di-miel-lip-balm

I have tried so many lip balms, but this one I keep coming back to.
It's nice and heavy, doesn't dry out or strip your lip, and softens and moisturizes like no other!

Fly in comfort with Lufthansa

Eye Gels

eye-gel-masks

Have you ever had a good look at people deplaning from a long international flight? They always look beaten up around the eyes. The same goes for when you've spent time out in hot weather, be it pool-side, at the ocean, on a boat - you name it.
I am a huge fan of eye gels. I use them on the plane (if people around me are sleeping), sometimes I will slip them on and then put my sleeping mask over top. I use them while I am away too.
What they do is super hydrate the under eye area, depuff, revitalize, and make the under eye look refreshed. I'm not sure that they say they take out the blue/grey under your eyes, but I am convinced that they do. Maybe they get the blood circulating through the area or maybe the nutrients just reflect off something glorious, but either way they are wonderful!
I buy my eye gels online at Memebox. They are very inexpensive and worth their weight in gold!

Facial Oil

Tatcha-Facial-Oil

I treat myself to Tatcha's Camellia Facial Oil when I travel.
It comes in travel size, so you don't have to break the bank to get it.
I use it during the flight and also every day while I'm away. It super hydrates and nourishes the skin, so your complexion looks luminous, but it also has a dry finish, so you don't look slimy. It is fantastic!

Oribe Dry Texturing Spray

oribe-travel-spray

Have you ever smelled Oribe products??? They smell heavenly.
Have you ever smelled hair after a long haul flight??  Quite apart from the fact that your hair looks lank and flat after a long flight, 8 hours plus in that stale, over-circulated air makes your hair smell. It's gross. Especially gross when you are standing in long lines of humans waiting to go through passport control. Especially gross when you are going to be met with a big, long hug on the other side of customs and immigration.
So I always pack the travel size of Oribe Dry Texturing spray in my hand luggage. It works like a dry shampoo to give your hairdo some body, and it smells so fabulous you won't be worried about anyone burying their face in your hair.

Stila Aqua Glow Gel Bronzer

stila-aqua-glow-perfecting-bronzer-gel

This one is a recent addition to my travel arsenal, but it is fantastic!
When you deplane after a long flight your skin has a nasty grey hue to it. No one (who hasn't flown first class) looks fantastic after a long flight, everyone looks hellish.
If you try to put color back into your complexion with a bronzing powder it sits on top of that ashen skin and looks orange.

Last year I started using Stila's Aqua Glow Perfecting Bronzer gel and I totally love it! You just put a tiny amount in the general area of the apples of your cheeks and buff it out with your finger. Run a little across your forehead where the sun would hit you and you instantly look lovely.
The great thing is that you don't have to get all perfect with it. It's really sheer and buildable, and just looks like gorgeous skin. The color is lovely too, and it doesn't get streaky or turn orange.

2. Sheet Masks

sheet-masks

This is one of my not-so-secret travel beauty secrets! When I arrive at my hotel or vacation rental I take 20 minutes of quiet time with a sheet mask. (of course you cleanse your skin first!). Sheet masks infuse your skin with nutrients, are soothing and cooling and hydrating, leaving your skin luminous and glowing every after a trans-world flight.
If I'm going somewhere humid I know my skin is going to break out or give me some form of grief, so I pack some sheet masks that deal with black heads or breakouts. If I'm going somewhere beachy I know I need some extra hydrating. If I get too much sun or sand has left my skin feeling gritty or sensitive I use an aloe based sheet mask.
They are very inexpensive - only a couple of dollars each, and they are slim and lie flat in your suitcase so they take up no room at all, making them your perfect travel companion! I order mine online at Memebox, and always add a few into every order I place. (And I place lots of orders at Memebox!)

7 Step Checklist For Fabulous Fall Hair

ASOS-Fedora
Black Fedora from ASOS

Have you changed your hair up yet for autumn/winter?
I love autumn hair, and I love getting my hair ready for the colder months, especially after wearing it up for most of the summer.
I also love the ASOS black fedora in the picture above. I think that is going to be my hat for the season!

Here is my 7 step checklist to get your hair fabulous for fall:

1. Clarify.

Clarifying-Shampoo
Malin + Goetz Clarifying Peppermint Shampoo

Use a clarifying shampoo to clear out the last of the dry shampoo, leave in conditioner, SPF, shine products - everything you've been piling into your hair over the last few months. Many colorists also recommend using a clarifying shampoo the day before coming in for your new color.
Try Malin + Goetz Peppermint Shampoo, it's super gentle (some clarifying shampoos feel like you've just used dish washing liquid on your hair) and it cleanses and purifies your hair and scalp while it re-balances them too.
I order mine online from Space NK

2. Do A Scalp Treatment

Scalp-Dermabrasion

Just as our complexions need masks and deep treatments, so do our scalps. One of my hairstylist friends turned me onto
Nioxin Scalp Renew a few months ago when I was convinced my hair was growing thinner and weaker strands. She said that just as we need to exfoliate our face, our scalp needs an occasional micro-dermabrasion treatment too, but without all the gritty stuff.
After a long summer of product use, perspiration, maybe some excess oils, or just the extra products we use during the summer, you'll love the way your hair thanks you for an at home scalp treatment like this one. Your hair not only looks revitalized, but it gets it's bounce back too!
I couldn't find it in retail stores, but you can buy Nioxin Scalp Renew at Amazon.com

3. Add In A Strengthening Product.

Hair-Strengthening-Products

My hairdresser has me using Olaplex once per week to strengthen my hair, eliminate damage and make it extra glossy. If you color your hair you will find your color lasts longer and stays more vibrant and healthy looking.
You can find Olaplex on Amazon.com

4. Get A Good Cut.

As soon as summer is over (which here in Phoenix is not til mid or late October) you need to get a really good cut. Have your shape restyled, or go for something new, but get rid of the last inch of summer - more if needed. All the damage done by surf, sun, chlorine and hot weather needs to be removed so that your hair can be fabulous for fall.

Space.NK

5. Warm Up

Fall is definitely the time to warm up your hair color and get rid of the brassy tones of summer. Especially you blonde girls - get rid of your platinums and icy blondes, and replace them with warm honey blondes and baby beige blondes.

6. Moisturize

Oribe-Hair-Mask

Cold weather, central heating, wind, basically all the elements of fall and winter strip your hair of its natural moisture. Repair, protect, and generally love your hair up with a luxurious deep treatment moisture mask. Make sure you use one that won't weigh your hair down or leave it limp. My personal favorite is Oribe Signature Moisture Mask. Not only is the product itself amazing, but the smell of Oribe products is incredibly beautiful. Everything about it is luxurious.
You can order Oribe Signature Moisture Mask at SpaceNK.com

7. De-Frizz

De-Frizz-Your-Hair

Autumn wind and rain can wreck havoc on your 'do and leave you with frizzy hair. Hats and scarves rubbing on your hair can do the same. Use a lightweight oil to tame your hair and keep the frizzies under control. I use Oribe Gold Lust Oil to keep my hair smooth. I actually buy it in the travel size and take it everywhere in the world with me. Its very lightweight, smells like heaven, and gives you the double winter-whammy of de-frizzing and giving you shine without weighing down your hairdo and making it go flat.
You can also order the travel size Oribe Gold Lust Oil online at SpaceNK (It comes in the big size too).

Keep Your In-Flight Beauty Game - Strong! beauty Tip Of The Week #25

Have you ever watched an international flight deplaning? Especially a good, long flight?
It's like watching a real live episode of The Walking Dead, without the bloody bits.
Passengers tend to look a uniform shade of ashen grey, their hair is all over the place - in general they look like hell.

When my plane lands I'm always either bouncing straight into work or into some fun social engagement, so I need to have my game face on. Or at least not look like a vampire. for me it's all about which beauty products I take on board with me. This morning I'm packing for the Glam Italia 2 Tour which takes off tomorrow, so today we are looking at some Cabin Baggage Beauty.

Inflight-Beauty

Here is what is coming on board with me:

Cabin-Baggage-beauty
Beauty products going in my cabin baggage

Starting with skin care. I always fly with no makeup on. Makeup looks ghastly at the end of a long flight, so I work my skin care game throughout the flight and then either put on makeup an hour before landing, or in the restroom after we de-plane.

Read my post about beating Jet Lag here

Tatcha Luminous Dewy Skin Mist is a lifesaver. I spritz this on before the flight and then as needed during the flight for extra hydration and nourishment.

I give my skin a liberal coating of both Tatcha Ageless Revitalizing Cream and Tatcha Ageless Revitalizing Eyecream to bind in the moisture. I either buy them in travel size, or get them in sampler boxes from the Tatcha website. These items are from the Mother's Day Gift Set I received this year.

Tatcha Gold Camellia Lip Balm keeps lips from drying out and cracking and also feels incredibly luxe.

Don't forget your hands - they suffer from the lack of water in the air too. Keep your hands looking lovely with Tatcha Indigo Handcream (also available in travel size).

Instead of looking ghostly when you land, apply a sheer coat of Makeup Forever Skin Equalizer primer to give your skin an even surface, followed by Makeup Forever Lift Concealer (if you have dark rings under your eyes) and a little MAC BB cream to bring back some color into your complexion and get rid of the long flight pallor.
I love Inglot AMC Liquid Blush. If you don't have access to Inglot grab a Nars Multiple Stick in a warm tone like Portofino.

A full face of makeup isn't necessary, just focus on your brows, cheeks, lashes and lips. Givenchy makes a good brow pencil, I've used the Shu Uemura lash curler for years, and I'm a die-hard fan of Diorshow Blackout Mascara. I use a flesh toned pencil from Philosophy in the water line to brighten my eyes

When you are looking washed out your best friend is a pair of dark sunglasses and a bright lip.
Reds can be a little too fierce so I always go for the vibrant pop of color you get from bold pinks and fuchsias. Try MAC lipstick in Impassioned after shaping your pout with MAC lip liner in Vino.

Everyone smells awful after 8 hours+ in a cabin with recirculating air. More importantly your hair smells stale.
Oribe Cote D'Azur Hair Refresher Spray smells like heaven and totally refreshes your locks. (you can buy it in travel size too)

All these items fit easily into my see thru Miami Blue cosmetics pouch from Stephanie Johnson.

Can you believe Katy Perry got the Carine Roitfeld treatment? I'm going to read all about it in the September issue of Harpers Bazaar during my flight.

Destination Honeymoon ~ Which Beauty Products You Should Pack

Last September I shot a story for
about which beauty items you should pack
to take on your honeymoon.
If you are getting married this year, or if you are traveling, this is a great guide for you.
Here is the Phoenix Bride and Groom Magazine article, reposted.

Bon Voyage!

Corinna Cooke on an Easy Honeymoon Beauty Routine

“I’m always getting on a plane to somewhere! Whether it’s a shoot across the country or across the world, I always follow these four beauty travel tips. They work perfectly for your honeymoon too!”
Corinna Cooke

Honeymoon-Travel-Beauty-Packing-What-To-Pack
1
Travel Bags. I like my beauty products to go in my cabin baggage, so they arrive at the same destination as I do, when I do! I use see-through cosmetic travel bags from Stephanie Johnson. They are beautiful and chic, are easy to take through airport security and are sturdy enough to protect all my beauty products. I also take them to the beach – one with sunscreens and a separate one for any post-beach hair and makeup goodies. I don’t want sandy bottles of tanning products mixed in with my hair and lip products, and I like being able to see what’s in each bag. Remember all your liquid products have to be 3 fluid ounces or less to go in your carry on baggage.

2
Honeymoon-Travel-Beauty-Packing-Verso-Skin-CareThe Skin Care Equation. Think about the climate you are traveling to before you pack. If you live somewhere dry, like Phoenix, and are going somewhere humid, such as a beach honeymoon, you will need to change to lighter skin care products. I travel with Verso skin care products (thoughtfully sized at 3 fluid ounces or less). I add a broad spectrum sunblock with the highest SPF I can find (a sunburned face isn’t exactly honeymoon glam), an eye-makeup remover to dissolve waterproof mascara, and a soothing face mask like luxurious Tatcha Luminous Deep Hydration Lifting Mask to keep skin looking lovely.

Honeymoon-Travel-Beauty-Packing-Makeup

3
The Makeup Story.

The key to travel makeup is to keep it simple. You don’t want to spend your honeymoon in front of a makeup mirror and you don’t want to weigh your bags down with more cosmetics than necessary. Opt for a fresh-faced look with a BB Cream instead of a heavy foundation, pack a little something for your brows, a bronzer to keep you looking beachy, and a soft blush to add a little color. Take one color story for your eyes. I like a soft goldy/bronzy look as it goes with everything, always looks gorgeous and you can dress it up or down. Waterproof mascara and a great eyeliner in espresso brown or a deep plummy-grape complete the perfect travel eye makeup story. Lastly pack two lip options: a soft, kissable glossy lip in a gentle tone and one bold color for a va-va-voom lip to knock ‘em dead on a dressy night out.

4
The Hair Story. A climate change can make for a really bad hair day, so you want to have some rescue options with you. A little hair decadence feels divine, so I travel with Oribe products. I pack the Oribe single-use travel shampoo and conditioner packs because they are fabulous, smell divine and take up absolutely no space at all. Oribe’s travel-sized Anti Humidity Spray tames any flyaways or crazy humidity hair, Dry Texturizing Spray is fantastic if you need a little post-hat-hair lift, and Apres Beach Spray gives you great beachy-looking waves when you don’t actually have any. I also love the Oribe Gold Lust Nourishing Oil both to make hair glossy and shiny, and also to protect color and keep the ends from getting destroyed by sun, surf and wind.

4 Beauty Tips To Revitalize Winter Hair

Has your winter hair had an attack of the blahs?
Here are 4 tips to revitalize your hair and rejuvenate your look.

Get A Scalp Treatment
Scalp Treatment at Azur West

Just like the rest of your skin, your scalp can get dry and irritated in the cold winter weather.
A scalp treatment with a really good massage won't heal any medical issues with your scalp, but it will lift your spirits, feel really fantastic, and maybe temporarily ease the winter dryness.
And hair always seems to look bouncy and luscious after a good scalp massage.

Use A Deep Treatment
Talk to your hair stylist and find out the right treatment for your hair type. You don't want a treatment that will weigh down your fine or thin hair, and you don't want something that doesn't do anything for your thick or coarse hair.
Find a deep treatment product that penetrates the hair shaft. Plenty of them just coat the outside and then rinse off.

If you're feeling super indulgent and want to splurge, try Oribe Signature Moisture Masque.
Oribe products are all spectacularly high performance, and the smell is heavenly.

Make The Cut

Mid winter is a great time to try out a drastic new cut, or to just have a major trim and reshape.
Once a year (mid-winter) I get a good 2 to 3 inches cut off my hair, and have it totally reshaped.
If I'm going for a new look, mid-winter is when I do it. There's plenty of time for it to grow out before spring, you can hide it under a hat if you don't like it, and especially for those sporting longer tresses, your hair will love you for it!

Color It Up

Adding color will totally rejuvenate your look.
Start merging away from lowlights and into highlights, to herald an early spring.
Use color to emphasize your new cut, to add life and shine to your hair, to boost your skin tone.
Often when the winter blahs have your skin looking sickly, just juicing up the color can breathe new life into your complexion

How To Make Your Hair Shine

Summer can be super harsh on your hair.
Everything from sun damage to chlorine to surf and sand
contribute to stripping the sheen from your hair and leaving it looking lifeless and lack luster.

Here are some great tips to help you get  (and maintain!) shiny, glossy hair.

1.) Brazilian Blowouts
I love the Brazilian Blowout! As a more permanent treatment it helps the hair to stay smooth and glossy, regardless of where you are. Your styling time is cut in half, so you have less heat damage from blow dryers and irons, and even the most vicious humidity won't leave you frizzy.

2.) Use a shine enhancing shampoo.
Shampoo that contains jojoba, olive oil or rice proteins will work in your favor.
Avoid shampoos that strip the hair, and avoid "clarifying" shampoo.

3.) Use conditioning treatments that penetrate the hair shaft.
Plenty of deep treatments and conditioners really  don't penetrate that deeply. If at all. Often they just lay product on top of the hairshaft, and then it just rinses away.
Leave conditioner on for at least 3 minutes.

Oribe Hair Products

4.) After towel drying the hair use a glossing cream (fine hair) or a serum (course hair) that contain Vitamin B5.
Or any of the Oribe shine products.
Comb through the hair evenly. (My hairdresser has me start underneath and then work my way through so that I don't saturate the top layer).
Saltwater sprays tend to leave a more matte finish to the hair, so if its shiny hair you're after, they may not be your best choice.
After blowdrying spritz a shine spray if needed.
Oribe Apres Beach

On shoots I frequently work with hairstylist Drew Noreen, who exclusively works with Oribe products. He has me completely addicted to them - nothing, nothing makes my hair look glossier
than Oribe, and the smell is to die for. ( a thousand glorious, heavenly deaths...)

5.) Blow dry your hair correctly - use a round brush and angle the dryer downwards. This helps keep the cuticle flat - angling the dryer up or to the side can lift the cuticle. Sliding the brush gently down the hair shaft while blow drying helps the cuticle to lie flat.

6.) If you color your hair have your colorist do a shine treatment to help your color stay fresh and glossy.
